Emily Dickinson

The difference between Despair
And Fear – is like the One
Between the instant of a Wreck
And when the Wreck has been -

The Mind is smooth – no Motion -
Contented as the Eye
Upon the Forehead of a Bust -
That knows – it cannot see -

Okay, so maybe this guy KNOWS -- but he's doing an awfully good job of faking it.

Or perhaps he derives from one of those classes for which any show of emotions is something not done.

One recalls the head of Charlotte Corday, in the basket, having been said to be continuing to smile.

But at least she had the satisfaction of a job well done.

I think we know we are sailing into the Wreck every minute, knowing doesn't help, smiling doesn't help.
