The irrepressible inner narrator guesses that the wolf in sheep's clothing ate the silly canary and escaped the consequences by posing as merely another irresponsible, absent-minded kitty-cat.
Perhaps in order to save the world one must give oneself over to the shape-shifting whims of the immediate moment, and just do the best one can, as one can, to ameliorate the suffering wherever one finds it.
There is never far to look.
